(CWNews.com) - The US embassy in Vietnam lodged a formal protest to that country's foreign ministry on Friday at the arrest of Father Nguyen Van Ly, an outspoken opponent of the Communist regime's repression of religion.
James Kelly, the US assistant secretary for Asian and Pacific Affairs, said the arrest could hurt a pending trade agreement between the two countries. Father Ly had testified before Congress earlier this year in opposition to the trade agreement, saying it would only reward the regime for its brutal suppression of human rights.
"The ambassador and other US officials have raised our strong concerns with the Vietnamese government and urged that Father Ly be returned to his church residence," an embassy spokesman said. Father Ly, 54, was taken into custody early Thursday outside his home, a day after celebrating a Mass during which police said he distributed "propaganda against the government."
