Fr. Jess S. Brena was born in Spain in 1929. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1946 and joined the China Mission in 1951.
Ever since the completion of his studies in 1964, Fr. Brena has been working in Taiwan. He started the first Credit Union in Taiwan, and did social work and social action leadership training for 15 years. He has traveled extensively through Asia as a member of a Jesuit social action team called SELA (Socio-Economic Life in Asia).
For the past 11 years, as Director of the Volunteer Lay Apostles Promotion and Training Center, he has been active in training the laity. He was Executive Secretary for 3 years, of the Committee for the Laity of the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences (FABC). He has been invited to a good number of Asian and Pacific countries to introduce the Lay Apostles Training Program.
