The diocese of Kaohsiung, created in 1961 is a suffragan of the metropolitan see of Taipei. It has an area of 5,723 sq km and a population of 3,530,790.
Although today there are only 45,187 Catholics, Kaohsiung is famous because it was here that the first missionaries arrived in the 17th century. They were Spanish Dominicans who set out from the Province of Fuken in southern China. And it was from here that about 140 years ago that evangelization was resumed after an interruption.
In the interior there are still a few entirely Catholic villages from where vocations have come and continue to come. There are 62 parishes, 86 priests, 144 women Religious and 27 major seminarians. The shrine of Our Lady of Wan-chin, elevated as Minor Basilica, is a centre of pilgrimage for the whole island.
