Foreign quake rescue teams
arrive in Taiwan

Taipei, Sept. 23, 1999 - An elite U.S. search and rescue team arrived in Taichung along with teams from at least 11 other countries to help with rescue efforts already underway triggered by Sept. 21's massive earthquake.

Germany, Russia, Switzerland, Turkey, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Israel, the Philippines, Britain and Thailand all dispathched experts. Search dogs accompanied some of the teams. Saying it had received no objections from mainland China, the United Nations sent a disaster assessment team.
