Phoenix (VNTW 19-12-2025) - Ngày 19 tháng 12 năm 2025, Văn phòng Giáo Phận Phoenix cho biết Phòng Báo Chí Tòa Thánh đã thông báo Ðức Thánh cha Lêô XIV bổ nhiệm cha Peter Bùi Ðại, linh mục thuộc giáo phận Phoenix, làm giám mục phụ tá giáo phận Phoenix, Arizona, Hoa Kỳ, với hiệu tòa Ausafa.
Giám mục tân cử Peter Bùi Ðại sinh ngày 11 tháng 01 năm 1970 tại Phú Quốc, Việt Nam. Sau khi sang Hoa Kỳ và định cư tại New Orleans, bang Louisiana, ngài gia nhập Ðệ tử viện Dòng Ðạo binh Chúa Kitô, khấn dòng năm 1991 và được thụ phong linh mục vào ngày 24 tháng 12 năm 2003. Ngài theo học tại đại học Giáo hoàng Regina Apostolorum, Nữ Vương các Tông Ðồ, của dòng tại Rôma, và tốt nghiệp cử nhân triết học.
Trong sứ vụ linh mục, cha Peter Bùi Ðại đã đảm nhận nhiều trách vụ khác nhau: tuyên úy tại một trường trung học ở Caracas (Venezuela) từ năm 2003 đến 2006; phó xứ tại các cộng đoàn do dòng phụ trách ở Phoenix; gia nhập giáo phận Phoenix năm 2009; phục vụ tại Hội đồng Giáo hoàng Cor Unum giai đoạn 2011-2016; chánh xứ từ năm 2017 đến 2022; và từ năm 2022 đến nay là đại diện giám mục đặc trách về giáo sĩ của giáo phận Phoenix.
Tân Giám mục Peter Bùi Ðại là vị Giám mục thứ 5 trong cộng đồng người Việt tại Hoa Kỳ. Vị thứ nhất là Ðức Cha Dominic Mai Thanh Lương được bổ nhiệm làm Giám mục phụ tá Giáo phận Orange ngày 25 tháng 4 năm 2003; Ðức cha Thomas Nguyễn Thái Thành được bổ nhiệm làm Giám mục Phụ tá Giáo phận Orange ngày 6 tháng 10 năm 2017; Ðức cha Gioan Trần Nhàn được bổ nhiệm làm Giám mục Phụ tá Giáo phận Atlanta ngày 22 tháng 10 năm 2022; Ðức Cha Micae Phạm Minh Cường được bổ nhiệm làm Giám mục phụ tá Giáo phận San Diego ngày 6 tháng 6 năm 2023, và sau đó được bổ nhiệm làm Giám mục Chính Tòa Giáo phận San Diego ngày 22 tháng 5 năm 2025. Với việc bổ nhiệm Tân Giám mục Peter Bùi Ðại, đánh dấu thêm một linh mục gốc Việt được trao phó sứ vụ giám mục tại Hoa Kỳ, là niềm vui không chỉ cho giáo phận Phoenix mà còn cho cộng đồng Công giáo Việt Nam khắp nơi.

Pope Leo XIV Appoints Monsignor Peter Bui as Auxiliary Bishop of Phoenix.
WASHINGTON - Pope Leo XIV has appointed Reverend Monsignor Peter Dai Bui, as Auxiliary Bishop of Phoenix. Monsignor Bui is a priest of the Diocese of Phoenix and currently serves as the diocese's Vicar for Clergy. The appointment was publicized in Washington, D.C. on December 19, 2025, by Cardinal Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States.
The following biographical information for Bishop-elect Bui was drawn from preliminary materials provided to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops:
Monsignor Bui was born January 11, 1970, in Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam. He studied at the Legion of Christ Minor Seminary and entered the Legion of Christ Novitiate in Cheshire, Connecticut in 1989, making his First Profession in 1991. Monsignor Bui attended the Pontifical Athenaeum in Rome, earning degrees in philosophy and theology as well as a licentiate in philosophy (2003). He was ordained to the priesthood on December 24, 2003, for the Legionaries of Christ (a religious order).
Bishop-elect Bui served as chaplain of a private Catholic school in Caracas, Venezuela, organizing mission trips to Amazonia and Medellin, Colombia (2003-2006). He was incardinated into the Diocese of Phoenix in October 2009. His pastoral assignments in the diocese have included: associate pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe parish in Queen Creek (2007-2008); associate pastor at Christ the King parish in Mesa (2008-2010); pastor at Resurrection parish in Tempe (2010-2011); and pastor at Holy Spirit parish in Tempe (2017-2022). Bishop-elect Bui also served as an official on the Pontifical Council Cor Unum from 2011-2016. On December 16, 2014, he was named a Chaplain to His Holiness, with the title of Monsignor. Since 2022, Monsignor Bui has served as the Vicar for Clergy for the Diocese of Phoenix. He speaks English, Vietnamese, Spanish, Italian, and German.

Diocesan Pastoral Center (DPC) staff had a special surprise when Bishop John Dolan announced the appointment of Bishop-elect Peter Dai Bui by Pope Leo XIV at their annual Advent retreat today (Dec. 19) at Mount Claret Retreat Center in Phoenix. Vicar for Clergy at the DPC since 2022, the bishop-elect received a standing ovation from his fellow staff members including laypeople, priests and religious.
Bishop Dolan presented Bishop-elect Bui with his pectoral cross and Auxiliary Bishop Eduardo Nevares presented him with his fuchsia zucchetto - two unique symbols that represent the office and authority of Catholic bishops. During his upcoming installation Mass, the bishop-elect will also receive his miter, crozier and ring.
Remarks in English, Spanish and Vietnamese were given by the bishop-elect who expressed his deep gratitude and humility to receive the call to the office of bishop. He also shared his desire to serve the people of God, acknowledged the influence of his late-father, mother and 11 siblings and he also asked for prayers as he steps into this new role.
It was also announced that Bishop Dolan will pray the prayers of consecration during Bishop-elect Bui's Installation Mass along with Auxiliary Bishop Nevares and Bishop Emeritus Thomas Olmsted.
This historic moment will feature four bishops of the Diocese of Phoenix serving in their unique capacities at the same time.
